You are almost never awarded forts when part of a faction for any dlc or mod. You'll almost always get a village and one that's right in the middle of enemy territory.
You need to claim a fort for yourself first, go through the whole irrelevant process if you're joining a faction of naming your kingdom, assigning ministers etc as it will all be disbanded upon becoming a vassal. Renown may offer better rewards and quests but it certainly offers no favor for being awarded forts or towns.
You can keep all your fiefs upon joining a faction, even if you owned almost everything in the map, which at that point it'd be pointless to join. Story mode works with its own rules.
